Discover the Usambara Mountains
The Usambara Mountains in northeastern Tanzania are part of the ancient Eastern Arc mountain chain, sometimes called the “Galapagos of Africa” for their extraordinary levels of endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. These mountains are estimated to be over 100 million years old, making them among the oldest geological formations in East Africa.
The Usambaras rise to around 2,440 meters and are divided into two ranges: the West Usambaras centered around the charming town of Lushoto, and the East Usambaras near Amani, home to some of Tanzania’s last remaining pristine tropical rainforest. The mild climate, fertile soils, and regular rainfall have made these mountains home to the Shambaa people for centuries, and their terraced hillsides and traditional villages create a cultural landscape as beautiful as the natural one.
Unlike the summit-focused treks of Kilimanjaro, Meru, or Oldonyo Lengai, trekking in the Usambaras is about the journey itself. Gentle trails wind through ancient forest, past tumbling waterfalls, through spice-scented farms, and into welcoming villages where life moves at a pace unchanged for generations. It is the perfect complement to a Tanzanian safari or beach holiday, offering a completely different dimension of this remarkable country.

What Makes Usambara Special
Incredible Biodiversity
The Eastern Arc Mountains are a global biodiversity hotspot. The Usambara Mountains alone are home to the Usambara eagle-owl, the Usambara weaver, the Usambara two-horned chameleon, and dozens of plant species found nowhere else. The Amani Nature Reserve in the East Usambaras protects some of the most species-rich forest in all of Africa.
Rich Cultural Heritage
The Shambaa people have inhabited these mountains for centuries, developing a sophisticated agricultural system perfectly adapted to the highland terrain. During your trek, you will visit traditional homesteads, learn about indigenous farming techniques, discover local medicinal plant knowledge, and experience the warm hospitality that the Shambaa are renowned for.
Stunning Viewpoints
The Irente Viewpoint is one of the most dramatic panoramas in Tanzania, with the Masai Steppe stretching endlessly below you. Other spectacular viewpoints along the trekking routes offer views of the Pare Mountains, the Lwengera Valley, and on clear days, the distant outline of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Perfect Climate
The Usambara Mountains enjoy a pleasant, mild climate year-round, with temperatures typically ranging from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. The altitude keeps the heat and humidity of the lowlands at bay, making for comfortable walking conditions even in the warmest months.
Essential Information
Best Time to Visit
The Usambaras can be visited year-round, but the best months are June to October (dry season) and December to February. The rainy seasons (March to May and November) bring lush green landscapes but trails can be muddy and slippery. The mountains are beautiful in every season.
Fitness Requirements
The trekking is gentle to moderate with no technical climbing involved. Trails involve rolling hills with some steeper sections, typically covering 10-20 kilometers per day. Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and a love of walking will enjoy these treks. The altitude rarely exceeds 2,000 meters, so altitude sickness is not a concern.
Accommodation
Depending on your chosen itinerary, accommodation ranges from charming local guesthouses and eco-lodges to homestays with Shambaa families. All options are clean and comfortable, and meals feature fresh local produce from the surrounding farms.
Getting There
The West Usambaras are centered around Lushoto, approximately 350 kilometers from Arusha (5-6 hours by road) or 100 kilometers from Tanga on the coast. We arrange all transfers from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Tanga. The scenic drive through the Lwengera Valley and up the winding mountain road to Lushoto is an experience in itself.
What to Bring
Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots, rain jacket, warm fleece or sweater for evenings, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, binoculars for birdwatching, daypack, and refillable water bottle. Trekking poles are helpful but not essential.
