What Is Oldonyo Lengai
Oldonyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, is one of the most extraordinary volcanic treks on Earth. Rising 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) from the floor of the Great Rift Valley in northern Tanzania, this active stratovolcano is the only volcano in the world that erupts natrocarbonatite lava, a unique calcium and sodium carbonate lava that flows at temperatures far cooler than typical volcanic lava.
The mountain holds deep spiritual significance for the Maasai people, who have revered it for centuries as the home of their god Engai. During times of drought or hardship, Maasai elders make pilgrimages to the summit crater to pray for rain and fertility for their cattle.
For adventurous trekkers, Oldonyo Lengai offers an utterly unique climbing experience. The ascent is demanding, steep, and entirely unlike any other mountain in Tanzania. The barren, ash-covered slopes, the otherworldly crater with its strange carbonatite formations, and the commanding views over Lake Natron, the Ngorongoro Highlands, and the vast Rift Valley below create memories that last a lifetime.

The Climbing Experience
The Ascent
The climb starts from a base camp at around 1,000 meters elevation, situated at the foot of the volcano. The trail is steep from the start, gaining nearly 2,000 meters of elevation in approximately 8-10 kilometers. The lower slopes consist of loose volcanic ash and scree that can make footing challenging. As you climb higher, the terrain becomes rockier and steeper with some sections requiring hands for scrambling.
The Crater
Upon reaching the crater rim, you are greeted by one of the most surreal landscapes in Africa. The active crater contains bizarre carbonatite hornitos, small cone-shaped formations created by the unique lava. The cooled lava flows appear white and grey, creating an alien moonscape. When the volcano is in an active phase, you may see fresh black lava flows and feel the heat radiating from vents.
The Descent
The descent is considerably faster than the ascent, typically taking 2-3 hours. The loose ash and scree that made the ascent difficult actually aids the descent as you can slide and run down sections. Gaiters are highly recommended to keep volcanic ash out of your boots.
Essential Information
Best Time to Climb
June to October and December to March. Avoid the long rains (March to May) and short rains (November). Note that conditions on an active volcano can change rapidly regardless of season.
Difficulty Level
Strenuous. While no technical climbing equipment is needed, the steep gradient, loose terrain, and nighttime start make this a physically demanding trek. A good level of cardiovascular fitness is essential. The altitude is moderate compared to Kilimanjaro or Meru, so altitude sickness is less of a concern.
Getting There
Oldonyo Lengai is located south of Lake Natron, approximately 160 kilometers from Arusha. The drive takes 4-6 hours depending on road conditions. The last section is on rough tracks suitable only for 4×4 vehicles, which we provide.
What to Bring
Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, headlamp with extra batteries, 3-4 liters of water, energy snacks, warm layers for the summit (it gets cold at night), gaiters, dust mask or bandana (for volcanic ash), gloves, and sunscreen for the descent.
Safety
All our Oldonyo Lengai treks are led by experienced local guides who monitor volcanic activity closely. We maintain communication with local authorities and will postpone climbs if conditions are deemed unsafe. Your safety is our absolute priority.
