What Is Mount Meru

Mount Meru stands at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) as Tanzania’s second highest mountain and the fifth highest peak in Africa. Located within Arusha National Park, just 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro, this magnificent stratovolcano offers one of East Africa’s most rewarding yet underrated trekking experiences.

Unlike the crowded trails of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru sees far fewer climbers each year, giving you a more intimate and authentic mountain experience. The trek passes through diverse ecosystems ranging from lush montane forest teeming with wildlife to alpine desert and a dramatic volcanic crater. It is not uncommon to encounter giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and even elephants during the lower forest sections of the climb.

Many experienced trekkers consider Mount Meru to be more scenic and technically interesting than Kilimanjaro. The final summit push along the narrow ridge of the Socialist Peak is an exhilarating experience that rewards climbers with sweeping views of the Great Rift Valley and, on clear mornings, a breathtaking panorama of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the clouds to the east.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (4-Day Trek)

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

Elevation: 1,500m to 2,514m | Distance: 10 km | Time: 4-5 hours

Your trek begins at the Momella Gate inside Arusha National Park. An armed ranger accompanies the group as the trail passes through wildlife territory. The path winds through lush montane forest where you may spot giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, and various monkey species. You arrive at Miriakamba Hut with views of the Meru Crater below.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

Elevation: 2,514m to 3,566m | Distance: 5 km | Time: 3-4 hours

A shorter but steeper day through heather and moorland zones. The trail offers increasingly spectacular views as the vegetation thins. After reaching Saddle Hut, an optional afternoon hike to Little Meru Peak (3,820m) provides excellent acclimatization and stunning sunset views.

Elevation: 3,566m to 4,566m to 2,514m | Time: 12-14 hours total

You depart around midnight for the summit push. The trail traverses a narrow ridge with dramatic views into the volcanic crater on one side and the Rift Valley on the other. Reaching Socialist Peak at sunrise is an unforgettable moment, with Kilimanjaro glowing in the early morning light. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

Elevation: 2,514m to 1,500m | Distance: 10 km | Time: 2-3 hours

A gentle descent through the forest brings you back to Momella Gate. Keep your eyes open for wildlife on this final morning. After collecting your summit certificates, your vehicle transfers you back to Arusha.

Do I need a guide to climb Mount Meru?
